Instincts
Well, at least my photographic instincts seem to be "correct." As judged by comparing my photos to what ran in the Seattle Times and the Post-Intelligencer:

protesters with giant flags

same-sex marriage rally lovers

vote no on prop8

I like your two-men-kissing one better than the newspaper's. Very intimate, good framing, and gets just the important details.

Thanks sweetie; I agree. :-) But I suppose the photo editor wanted the full text of the sign (and I'm not sure the paper is ready for men kissing).

I like the one above that even better. Shows the full sign, and the kiss is implied. Chaste enough for the paper, but still glaringly obvious that they are about to makey-make.

How do you do that, by the way? I've seen your candid photos from several events like this, and you always seem to get the really great shots. You have the gift, my friend.

*Ahem* I didn't take that one - the newspaper photographer did. If I see him again, I'll be sure to ask him how he does it. ;-)

As for how *I* do it, it's a mix. Looking for interesting subjects, anticipating the action before it happens, and popping off three frames per second when it does.

The photojournalists have an advantage. 12fps. Sounds like a muffled machine gun.

Totally agree. Great shots all around. I was sad to have missed it.

My favorite is the sign that says "I can't believe we still have to protest this crap."

I think yours are better compositionally, but theirs are better journalistically. However, the guys kissing - I think yours is the better shot total. It's about the love. The PI one feels a little staged

Rallies, protests and other public events are pretty boring, artistically speaking. You both probably went to the places that were easily accessible and/or where other photographers were congregated. From there, the similarities in framing were unavoidable.

Having been to enough public events in Seattle, I'm willing to wager that the front of the march was a throng of nerds with cameras.

I'm sure if you worked a moving crowd of 4000 people, you'd take exactly the same shots; clearly there's no intelligence or talent at work.

There were perhaps four photogs in front of the march, including two newspaper guys. Most people don't understand where and when to position themselves, or how to use their cameras with a purpose in mind.
