Crossing the valley

Super-realistic facial animation has finally crossed the uncanny valley. Technically, this is high-res mo-cap, but I'm curious to see where it can go.

I don't think it even quite qualifies as mocap, because it's not reusable date. It's just a new scan, every frame, of the face. Brute forcin' it, I daresay.

Until it's generation not replication it doesn't really count does it? I mean this is nice and all, but if you know how it is being done the valley isn't even involved.

Well that's the question; can they break this down into components/sub-expressions and then animate at will? The article seems willfully vaugue about wether this is strictly VCR-like replay, or what.

If it's a catalog of 100 expressions that can be blended between, then hot dog.

There's still something funny about the movement of the mouth. If you had shown me this without me knowing it was fake, that's the one thing I'd have noticed. It seems like, when she makes a 'P' or 'B' sound, when the lips should come together they just barely miss. Like her lips are numb from the dentist's office. But then, I'm not seeing this in high-res.

Yeah, I'm at work so I haven't watched it with the sound on. I wondered if there'd be sync issues.

Her lips do look numb. Still, I'd date her. ;-)
