Wow. Just...wow.
Oh the Chinese!!!!!

They aired fake television footage of the Olympic opening ceremony, with computer-generated fireworks! The had a beautiful little girl lip-sync "Ode to the Motherland" in front of a billion people, while a not-so-beautiful little girl actually sang off-camera. Replaced at the last minute by members of the Politburu! This girl is too ugly to sing for China!

Are they cheating in the games as well?

Heard about the fireworks the other day and then the girl this morning. That's just sad. That poor girl.

Well, now China's being accused of lying about the age of their female gymnasts: http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/node/9491

Looking at the photo and the stats they give on the girls, I'd be looking into it if I were an Olympics official.

I suppose I shouldn't be shocked by all of this, but I am. For China the Olympics are just one big propaganda event. And not for their image in the world, but their image to their own people (since the world can see through this). Sigh.

That's just sick! The NY Times found pretty clear data that a couple of their ages were faked on recently-issued passports.

It's a dillema for me: I have many Chinese coworkers, and you can't fault a billion people, but their government is contemptible.

Sez the American with the contemptible government.

how is that a dilemma?

Most of my coworkers are Chinese, as are many (or possibly most; I haven't bothered counting) of my friends, and mentioning this to them doesn't have them pointing their fingers at me and accusing me of being racist. I mean, surely I could do better than that to offend them.

The problem in your head should only exist if you do lump all Chinese people you know as having the same mentality as their (former) government. But that would be just like assuming all Americans are conservative idiots because of George W. Bush.

I don't lump anyone in with anyone. However I do have to be highly circumspect about China when opening my mouth at Microsoft. As in, "Just don't say anything." You never know who might take it personally. Maybe it's different at a small company.

Sort of like, "Never discuss religion at a cocktail party."
