Holy shit. I've been posting to LJ for four years as of this week.

And nothing has changed for the better. I had a cooler apartment, a better job (though I was still miserable at work), and a girlfriend. *sigh* An unstable, deeply neurotic, pregnant girlfriend.

Oh, there have been some nice times along the way. That month in Europe. Drinking Mai Tais in Hawaii. Seeing my little brother leave home and enroll at my alma mater. But in the end, no ground gained.

Was surprised yesterday when Jessica called me at work and insisted I have dinner with her. "7 o'clock. I'll pick you up."

"Nah nah nah, that's way out of your way."

"7 O'CLOCK. I'LL PICK YOU UP."

She took me to a dimly-lit seafood place on the Kirkland marina, and we chatted until midnight. My mood was generally perplexed and too-thoughtful. We met four years ago (see my second-ever LJ entry), and on the eve of her sudden move to San Francisco, we're finally having a conversation? I tried to decipher her motives and could not.

I was feeling a bit wistful (always thought there'd be plenty of time to get to know her), and had to work hard at not lapsing into table-gazing silence. My appetite fled; I pushed bok choy around with a fork and sent the plate away half-full.

She admitted, "I read your livejournal yesterday."

"What? Shit. What? You found that? How much did you read?"

"All of it."

"...all of it?"

"Yeah. Back to 2001. I skimmed some."

I don't understand, but it's nice to have helped her procrastinate prior to the big move.

These are truly the end times. The TV just told me, "Go see Sin City!! Critics are blown away by the #1 movie in America: 'Thrilling!' 'Amazingly entertaining!'" And the quote attributions were not just flashed briefly - they were too blurry to read. When will they start using 100% fictional critics?
